Narrative
Jesse and Virgie married in December of 1899. Virgie was 21 and Jesse was 38 so they were quite old to be marrying back in those days. I had remembered hearing that Virgie ran away to marry him but no one else seemed to remember it. Finally, I talked to Nancilea (Sam's daughter). She confirmed that that was true. She said that Ben Mayfield had remarried. We think his first wife died in childbirth but we are not sure. Apparently the step mother was cruel to Virgie and she was not happy at home. A few years ago, a descendant of grandma's sister contacted us and she filled in some more details. Ben and his new wife decided they were taking baby Edgar and moving to Texas. Any siblings still at home, would be sent to live with married siblings. Virgie was not happy at all with the plan. Now, how the marriage was arranged is a mystery!
