Mr. Richard Johnson, 58 of Conroe died Thursday, November 29, 1979 in a Houston hospital. He was born March 31, 1921 in Frost, and was a former resident of Irene. He was the son of Jessie Ollie Johnson and Virginia Mayfield Johnson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Conroe. He was a veteran of World War II and had been employed by Missouri Pacific Railroad since 1947. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 2 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsboro. Burial was at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Here's another tidbit. Maurice Craig and my dad were best friends. They were only 3 years apart so they grew up together and signed up to fight in WWII. Maurice went to Europe and worked as a mechanic and drove the supply lines. Daddy went to the South Pacific and built radio towers in the jungle. When they got home from the war, they double dated and Maurice actually introduced my parents to one another. Maurice was dating my mother and then one day he saw her younger sister Frances. It must have been love at first sight but he wasn't sure how to get out of dating Mama and then ask Frances out. He told my Mom that he had an uncle that didn't talk much but he was a nice guy. My mom agreed to go out with him. So, Mama married Daddy and Maurice married Frances. Maurice worshipped the ground Frances walked on! They were quite a pair. So Maurice was my cousin on one side of the family and my uncle by marriage on the other. I always called him Uncle though. He was my favorite. Maurice was the life of every party!
