Narrative
Since Grandma and Grandpa divorced when my father was just a year old, he never knew her and the family didn't either. She'd been cut out of pictures and my father always wondered what she looked like. Around 2000, she found out my grandfather's address and contacted him, wondering if it would be alright to contact the kids. Apparently during all those years she had changed a bit (had become a Christian for one thing) but always thought that the kids would contact her if they wanted to, yet from our perspective, we didn't know what her name was or even if she was alive. Years went by and her husband, William, kept encouraging her to make the first move. She was timid but was very glad afterward that she did!
So she did contact and they visited our home in Mariposa. I remember them getting out of the car and she was very nervous. Grandpa William was immediately likeable though I wasn't used to his Massachusetts accent. He asked if we had any "chiggahs" out here and I thought perhaps he meant "chickens" (he meant chiggers, something I was happily unaquainted with at the time). It's been a neat relationship since then. We visited their place as a family in 2005. - Logan West
