The 1870 Census says she was born in Indiana. The 1900 Census says that she was born in Indiana, and her parents were born in Pennsylvania. The 1910 Census says that she was born in Indiana and that her mother was born in Pennsylvania, but her father's place of origin is difficult to read. The 1920 says that she was born in Indiana, her father in the USA, and her mother in Pennsylvania.

William Lafayette's entry in the 1910 Federal Census says that his mother was born in Michigan. His entry in the 1930 Federal Census says that she was born in Iowa.

Narrative

According to the 1900 Federal Census, Maria Ann Coffman Gorden's parents were born in Pennsylvania. The 1910 says that at that time she had born seven children, three of whom were alive.

Narrative

Galatia Gorden was the first white baby born in Michigan City, Indiana according to a newspaper clipping from an early Michigan City newspaper. He married Maria Ann Coffman who was ½ Indian, perhaps from the Blackfoot tribe. They are both buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan Township, LaPorte, Indiana.
