Hans Kierstede married Sara Jans Roelofse on 26 Jun 1642 in Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, NY.
Dr. Hans Kierstede was the first surgeon at New Amsterdam and a native of Magdeburg. He was also the distinguished founder of a family of physicians and apothecaries. The first recorded Coroner's inquest, May18, 1638, ever held in New York city was conducted by Master HansKierstede and his assistant, Master Gerrit Schutt on the body of GerritJansen, gunner at Fort Amsterdam, and found the latter had been stabbedto death on the fifth of May Ultimo.

Narrative

Hans Kierstede was born in 1612 in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. He was the son of Jacob Van Schriestadt. Hans was also known as Giersteeden.
Refugees from the 30 year war, were among the first settler to the Dutch colony in america, Known then as New amsterdam, present day New York. Hans Kierstede was German and from the town of Madeburg, located in north central germany, the capital of the Saxony-Anhalt, on the Elbe river. Madeburg is an important river port. With various religous tensions over the city of Madeburg, It was burned durring the swedish phase of the thirty years war in 1631.
Hans fled from Madeburg to holland after its sack by Count Tilly durring the thirty year war. He arrived in New amsterdam with the first gov., Governor Kieft, in 1638. He was employed as a suergon by the Dutch west india co.. He arrived in the new world on the ship called the Den Harinck. The ship departed from Texel, on the 7th of sept. 1637 and arrived in new amsterdam, on March 28, 1638.
Hans Married, Sarah Roelofs on the 29th of june 1642. It is often mentioned that governor kieft, was able to take multiple donations responsible for building the Dutch church in the colony.
He left the employ of the dutch west india co. in 1644 and started his own private practice. Making him the first practicing physician in the new colony.
