Honorable Luther A. Johnson,
House of Representatives
My dear Mr. Johnson:
I have your letter of June 23, 1932, in which you request to be furnished, on behalf of Judge Clay Nash of Corsicana, Texas, the military record of T. C. (Thomas Calhoun) Banks, a deceased Confederate veteran, who is supposed to have joined the Confederate Army in Henderson County, Texas, in 1861.
The Confederate records on file in my office show that Thomas C. Banks, whose name also appears on the records a T. C. Banks, but not as Thomas Calhoun Banks, private, Company K, 4th Regiment, Texas Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted July 11, 1861, at Athens, Henderson County, Texas. He was appointed corporal June 1, 1863; was wounded July 2 or 3, 1863, at the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; was captured at Cashtown, July 5, 1863, and paroled, until exchanged, at Point Lookout, Maryland, March 3, 1864. He was received at City Point, Virginia, March 6, 1864, by the Confederate Agent of Exchange; was appointed segeant May 7, 1864, and was surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, Confederate States Army, and paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.
Very Respectfully,
O. H. Bridges, Major General
The Adjutant General
(Mailed original to Honorable Clay Nash, Corsicana, Texas 6-28-32)
Narrative
During the Civil War, Thomas Banks served in the Texas Cavalry. Every night Peninnah with a 12 yr. old black boy would meet him in the Trinity River bottoms with a fresh horse. When the war was over he came home and became ill with meningitis and died March 1, 1883. The oldest son, Mid, died 3 days later. This left P. with five young children under ten yrs. of age. T. B. had left her with 400 acres of land and 100 brood mares.
